Sometimes you just GOTTA DANCE!!!

Me And My Dance Shoes Against The World is about dancing all over! As many of you may know, we (my family)spent several months touring around the country and street performing, as well as having the amazing opportunity to Open for the Zion I and Grouch tour. I tap danced and sang on street corners in a great number of major cities… Chicago, NY, LA, Boston, Baltimore, Seattle, Denver just to name a few. This was very challenging at first being primarily an ” On stage” performer. BUT, I GREW TO LOVE IT! It took us out of our comfort zone. YOU REALLY CAN DANCE ANYWHERE! And people will love to watch you dance ANYWHERE if they can see that you love what you do!

Sometimes you don’t have a studio space, sometimes you have a crappy camera, sometimes you don’t have film editing software, sometimes you are just caught in a creative moment and want to get it on film! Dance = Life, and life just happens. SO DOES DANCE!

WHAT DO YOU GOTTA DO TO TAKE PART?

Keep your dance shoes and a camera on you at all times, and when you feel like it, BUST A MOVE! GET FUN, GET CREATIVE, DANCE ANYWHERE AND EVERYWHERE! Film it, put it online…raw , real, edited, non edited, explained, unexplained, outside, inside, studio, street corner, bathroom, kitchen, living room, long, short, doesn’t mater! What matters is that when life inspires you to dance, you just dance, and you SHARE!!! THEN SEND IT TO ME! HASH TAG IT, SHARE IT, I WILL POST AND REPOST AND WE WILL START A MOVEMENT OF AWESOME RAW AND REAL DANCE!

NOVEMBER 14 A CHANGE OF HEART

Hmmm… weird blog. Random stream of not necessarily structured sentences or thoughts. Those are the best kind...

You know when you have one of those moments where the last 5 or so years of your life comes full circle and EVERYTHING starts to make sense?? The people you meet, the things you have done, the jobs you have taken, the places you have gone… EVERYTHING seems to have perfectly fallen into place in its own whacky way to get you to this ONE magical point that you are in this very moment and it is an amazing feeling. Not only is it a feeling of relief and accomplishment, but it is a feeling of KNOWING that “every passing second, is a chance to turn it all around” and those seconds got you HERE, and you are gonna be ok!

Well, despite hating living here, being taunted for my so called “left coast best coast” mentality ( sorry but I like my rights… and my tampons), having country music handed to me in my hip hop class(yes to dance to…for realz) and SNOW… no i don’t like snow, I managed to come to this beautiful moment! In a nut shell, I saw Cirque du Soleil and it was amazing. I have been fortunate enough to have an amazing Aunt who has taken me to several shows in amazing venues that have been breathtaking. THIS WAS LIFE CHANGING. It was not the dancing or the movement or the costumes necessarily, but the CONCEPT. THE VISION.

THE PURPOSE. THE STATEMENT. So there was that…

Then there was the thought of “UNITY of thought” that had to be had from the directors to the choreographers to the band to the performers all the way down to the stage crew. Not because it was such a huge production with so much going on, BUT BECAUSE THESE POEPLE ARE IN IT NOT JUST BECAUSE THEY LOVE TO MOVE AND ENTERTAIN, BUT TO MAKE CHANGE!

AHHH HAAAA! I WAS MEANT TO SEE THIS SHOW ON THIS NIGHT!

Then I started to think about why I went to the show (my huz said he saw it in mexico and has been raving about it since i met him 7 years ago… he does that:) and insisted we go to opening night and naturally, I was thrilled). But it was more than that. I traced my reasons for going to this show back 7 years! For real. I don’t know how it happened, but it did! No details needed. The point is not that I saw the show or that its been a whirlwind of events to get me, or anyone, to where they are now, but the point is that I was meant to hear/ see/ feel a message.

The message is something like this: YOU CAN CHANGE. YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE. THATS WHAT IT IS ABOUT, MAKING A DIFFERENCE. USE YOUR POSITION AND YOUR TALENT TO PROMOTE POSITIVITY. LET YOUR MIND RUN WILD ON YOUR ART. YOUR BOX IS ONLY A BOX IF YOU MAKE IT ONE. BE WEIRD. BE YOU. TELL STORIES. SHOW LIFE. BE LIFE… AND BE IT ON THE DANCE FLOOR!………RELIEF!

Even though I had put the days of Phenom and recital style dance shows behind me, I knew I wanted to put on more shows. I just did not know what that meant. I know that I once had an idea with a dear friend in our small but growing dance community and now its the norm and for a lot of people that still has not changed. This means it was a good idea, but I get bored easily. Something new had to happen and now I know what that is for me.

Am I going to create a Cirque inspired show? no, thats not what this means. What I am going to do is not put myself in a box. Maybe a heart or a triangle or an oval, but not a box. I am going to create something moving, long running, positive, unique, unusual, entertaining, dynamic, diverse… AND make a point. Say something, be something. Change something or SOMEONE!

Save someone, speak to everyone. Use the opportunity to change a heart OR open one. To spread love not just for dance, but for each other. Thats what this show did for me, and I want people to walk away from whatever I do feeling like that! I CAN Do that. I have good things to say and I need to put them on stage more!\

JUMP ON THE DANCE TRAIN WITH ME! It will be a great ride! You know how to get ahold of me if you want to take part.

Am I still going to shake dat bootay??? HELL YA! ITS ME, THATS WHAT I LOVE! Yes, I still want to choreo someones world tour, yes I still have dreams of Backup dancing for Britney,yes I want to hip hop my way across the world teaching and being fabulous…I just realized that my PURPOSE is more than just that! And, you all know, I am all about having your cake and eating it too!
